Track and Field at the 2025 CANUSA Games

Hamilton, Ontario | August 8–10, 2025

The 2025 CANUSA Games will feature an exciting Track and Field competition from August 8th to 10th in Hamilton, Ontario. Athletes from Hamilton and Flint will compete in a variety of events—sprints, distance races, relays, and field events—celebrating athleticism and international friendship.

Tryouts & Practices – Now Underway!

Free Track and Field practices take place every Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, starting June 9th, at the Ray Lewis Track and Field Centre. Open to athletes ages 11 – 15. these sessions are a great way to:

  • Try out for Team Hamilton
  • Improve your skills
  • Train in a fun, inclusive, and encouraging environment

Practices run rain or shine, with cancellations only for extreme weather (e.g., thunderstorms). Whether you’re new to track or an experienced athlete, everyone is welcome.

Age Divisions

Events are open to both girls and boys in the following age groups:

  • U11 (Born 2014 or later)
  • 12–13 (Born 2012–2013)
  • 14–15 (Born 2010–2011)

Commitment Requirement

To be considered for Team Hamilton, athletes must attend at least 80% of practices leading up to the Games. Consistent participation helps coaches with team selection and ensures athletes are prepared for competition.


Registration & Financial Support

Practices and tryouts are free.
Once teams are selected, a registration fee will apply to participate in the Games.
CANUSA offers financial assistance and scholarships for athletes who need support. Details will be shared closer to team selection.


Billeting Requirement

As the host city in 2025, Hamilton families must billet a visiting athlete from Flint during the Games weekend. Billeting is a longstanding CANUSA tradition that creates lifelong friendships and helps make the event affordable.

Vulnerable Sector Check Required:
All billet families must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check through Hamilton Police.

Val Sarjeant

Meet Val Sarjeant, a powerhouse in the world of track and field with a heart dedicated to coaching and community. For years, Val has served as the CANUSA Track & Field Coordinator, bringing boundless energy and organization to youth athletics.

But his journey in track and field doesn’t stop there. Val’s a former two-time member of the Canadian National Track & Field Team, showcasing his talent on the international stage. Nowadays, he’s the go-to coach, leading the way as Head Para Athletics Coach for the Hamilton Olympic Club and as Head Coach for Stoney Creek Athletics.

Marline Sarjeant

Marline Sarjeant has a rich history in athletics, boasting a distinguished career as a former sprinter and hurdler. Marline also had the honor of being a torch runner for the CANUSA Games, a testament to her enduring commitment to sports and community. Her administrative and leadership skills were honed during her tenure as an Administrator and Secretary at the Hamilton Olympic Club. Marline’s dedication to athletic development extends to coaching roles with the Special Olympics and the SCA, and she serves as a Run, Jump, Throw (RJT) instructor.

Beyond her personal achievements, Marline, along with her husband Val Sarjeant and their daughters Vanessa and Whitney, are integral figures in their community, particularly in sports and athletics. They are proud recipients of the Marg Brokenshire Award, recognizing their significant contributions. Marline also leads the St. James Children’s Ministry, further illustrating her commitment to youth. The CANUSA Games hold a special place in her heart, symbolizing the friendships, excitement, and shared experiences that unite children and parents in the joy of sports.


Rowan’s Law concussion awareness program

is mandatory and will be part of the registration process for all sports.
