‘Experience the Friendship’

After 5 years the CANUSA Games will be back in full swing in Hamilton for our 65th year, from August 11th – 13th. New and returning athletes and volunteers, join the fun and ‘Experience the Friendship’ that CANUSA Games offers!

CANUSA Games – OVERVIEW

History:

CANUSA has been a staple in the City of Hamilton since 1958, when a caravan of cars set out to Flint, Michigan to compete in its first ‘Friendship Tournament’. The Games have grown and continue to warm the hearts of all who participate.

Following the launch of the Greater Flint Olympian Games in 1957, the Flint city officials wanted a city that was similar in size and population to compete against each other on a yearly basis to further create more athletic competition – thus began the friendship between the two cities.

In its 65th year, the CANUSA Games is the largest and longest running international sporting competition in North America and the only one that is based on the foundation of friendship. The games are held annually between the cities of Hamilton, Ontario (Canada) and Flint, Michigan (USA).

The CANUSA games is committed to diversity, inclusion, and gender equity amongst its athletes, coaches, volunteers, and other stakeholders.

CANUSA welcomes all individuals to participate in our sporting events. We strive to embrace our differences while removing barriers to promote diversity, equity and foster inclusion.

As the longest running international games, we continue to listen, learn and collaborate on how we can be more inclusive and accessible. We are committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive industry where race, religion, gender identity, sexuality, and ability do not serve as barriers for participation.

Billeting

Every year the host city alternates, and the student athletes are billeted with host families that have kids competing in the Games.  This is where the motto and spirit of the Games “Experience the Friendship” turns into fruition.  After daily competition, athletes get a chance to just be kids and learn the different customs and cultures from each other, showing them what their host city has to offer and help create memories to last a lifetime.

In 2019, the Hamilton Board of directors decided to implement a Modified Billeting program that would allow the athlete the choice to stay in a hotel with their parents (in the visiting city) over the weekend of the Games.  Without taking away the mandatory match-up and bonding time with their host counterpart, parents can decide where their child spends the night while in Flint, Michigan.  This option still stands and is appreciated more than ever as we navigate our lives post pandemic.

While competition is a major part of the Games, the real focus is on creating and fostering international friendships. In many instances, this three-day event has developed friendships through billeting and friendly competition, which have grown and continued for many years after the competition has ended
